- Homelab/Student → Free ESXi 8 ISO (Option 1).
- Production Dell/HPE → Vendor Custom ISO (Option 3).
- Enterprise trial → 60-Day Evaluation (Option 2).
- Use Rufus (Windows) or BalenaEtcher (macOS/Linux).
- Settings for Rufus: Partition scheme = MBR, Target system = BIOS or UEFI, File system = FAT32.
- Write the ISO to a 8 GB+ USB drive.
- Boot the server from the USB.
- The free version may shift to a "180-day trial" only.
- Custom OEM ISOs will remain for Dell/HPE/Lenovo customers.
- The standard generic ISO might be paywalled behind a "VMware Cloud Foundation" subscription.
