To download the VMware ESXi 8 ISO, you must now use the Broadcom Support Portal, as Broadcom recently integrated VMware's software distribution.   • Homelab/Student → Free ESXi 8 ISO (Option 1).
  • Production Dell/HPE → Vendor Custom ISO (Option 3).
  • Enterprise trial → 60-Day Evaluation (Option 2).
  • Use Rufus (Windows) or BalenaEtcher (macOS/Linux).
  • Settings for Rufus: Partition scheme = MBR, Target system = BIOS or UEFI, File system = FAT32.
  • Write the ISO to a 8 GB+ USB drive.
  • Boot the server from the USB.
  • The free version may shift to a "180-day trial" only.
  • Custom OEM ISOs will remain for Dell/HPE/Lenovo customers.
  • The standard generic ISO might be paywalled behind a "VMware Cloud Foundation" subscription.
  • Unlimited CPU cores (per physical CPU)
  • Unlimited RAM (up to host limits)
  • Limitations: No vCenter Server management, no vMotion, no backup APIs, and an evaluation mode that expires after 60 days (which reverts to a limited free edition but remains functional).
  1. Download and open Rufus.
  2. Insert your USB drive (at least 8GB recommended).
  3. Under "Boot selection," click SELECT and choose the downloaded ESXi 8 ISO.
  4. Ensure the Partition scheme is set to GPT (for modern UEFI systems) or MBR (for legacy BIOS).
  5. Click START. Rufus may ask to download Idlinux files; allow it.
  6. Once finished, safely eject the USB.
