Nikko Rull Brush Photoshop
Unlocking the Painterly Power of the Nikko Rull Brush in Photoshop
Technique 2: The "Chunky" Block-in
Most beginners paint with soft airbrushes, resulting in "muddy" renders. The Nikko Rull forces you to think in shapes. nikko rull brush photoshop
Blocking in Colors
- Brush size: Large (300–800px)
- Flow: 60–80%
- Opacity: 100%
- Paint broad shapes with overlapping strokes to create texture variation.
The Grayscale to Color Method
- Paint your entire illustration in black, white, and grey using the Nikko Rull. (The texture gives gray scales a metallic, realistic feel).
- Create a new layer above. Set blending mode to Color.
- Paint your color over the grayscale using the same Nikko Rull brush.
- Because the texture is consistent across layers, the color adheres perfectly to the underlying light and dark values without looking flat.
Use the flat edge of the brush for hard, architectural shapes and the textured, lighter pressure for soft transitions. Vertical Reflections: Unlocking the Painterly Power of the Nikko Rull
The Golden Rule: If your Nikko Rull feels "too blurry," increase the Texture Scale to 150%. If it feels "too pixelated," decrease the Hardness slightly to 70%, though purists keep it at 100%. Brush size: Large (300–800px) Flow: 60–80% Opacity: 100%
