Verdict: While creating a bootable installer from a DMG is a necessary skill for IT professionals and power users working with legacy hardware or specific workflows, it is a friction-heavy process compared to the modern standard (using the createinstallmedia command with an App file). Success relies heavily on using the right third-party tools, as Disk Utility is often insufficient for the task.
- Use /dev/rdiskN (raw device) for faster write; replace rdiskN with the raw device (e.g., /dev/rdisk2).
- If you used the original .dmg directly and it's writeable, set if=/path/to/installer.dmg instead.

Method 1: The Universal Terminal Method (Works for 99% of DMGs)

The USB does not show up as a bootable option on startup.
- Solution: On Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4) Macs: Shut down, press and hold the power button until "Loading startup options" appears. On Intel Macs: Restart and hold the
Option (Alt) key. If it still doesn't appear, redo Method 1 – you likely used the wrong format (it must be GUID/Journaled).

Note that the latest versions of the help file and the DreamWeaver add-on are included in the
HTML Guardian 7 installer , you don't have to download them separately if you download and install the setup.
HTML Guardian Personal edition is completely free for personal use, and has all the features available in
the Professional and Enterprise editions.
The only major difference is that
it puts a small watermark in each encrypted file. Image Guardian functionality is limited,
but adequate for testing purposes.
Also the HTML Guardian Auto - Update
Utility is only available in the Professional and Enterprise editions (to update the free Personal edition, simply download and install the latest version on top of the existing installation).
The Personal edition does not have a time limit or any other usage limitations - you can test it as long as you wish, and encrypt an unlimited number of files with it.
